   ABSTRACT

Background: Conduct disorder is characterized by persistent and repetitive behavior that violates the rights of others or major societal norms that begins in childhood or adolescence. The objective is to analyze whether the levels of positive affect and negative affect among adolescents diagnosed of conduct disorder (CD) are different from the levels reported by other adolescents without the disorder.

Method: Three groups were prepared, the first consisting of 12 young inmates at the Integration Center for Adolescents (CIA) diagnosed with CD, a second group with 18 young inmates also in the center but without CD and the third consisting of 14 high school students without CD. We conducted a cross-sectional study in which participants applied the short questionnaire for the diagnosis of conduct disorder and the scale of positive and negative affect (PANAS) adapted to the Mexican population.

Results: Regarding the level of negative affect, there were no differences between the 3 groups. On the other hand, it was observed that the group with young inmates in the center but without CD reported lower levels of positive affect than the group of students of high school. However, no differences were observed between the group of young people with CD and the sample of students.

Discussion: In regards to negative affect, a possible compensatory effect is suggested as a possible explanation of the data obtained in this and other studies. So that adolescents with conduct disorder would experience higher levels of negative affect resulting from a deficit as an emotional self-regulation and less from guilt and shame for others. With regard to positive affect, the explanation offered is that the disorder may act as a “protection” against adverse situations such as being in detention.

Key words: adolescents, conduct disorder, conduct disorder, positive affect, negative affect.
